In addition to possessing certain mechanical properties, waterproof performance is the most critical characteristic of waterproof nuts. Waterproof nuts must undergo rigorous waterproofing testing to ensure they can prevent water from entering the joints under specified conditions, such as water pressure and immersion time. Different applications require different waterproofing ratings for waterproof nuts. For example, in some outdoor lighting connections, IPX4 waterproofing (splash resistance) may be sufficient, while underwater equipment may require IPX8 waterproofing (prolonged immersion). Furthermore, while ensuring a seal, waterproof nuts must also maintain performance stability across varying temperatures, ensuring that sealing components such as rubber gaskets do not lose their elasticity due to temperature fluctuations, thereby compromising waterproofing.
In terms of application, ordinary nuts have a wide range of applications, covering nearly all areas requiring mechanical connections. In construction, ordinary nuts are used to secure steel structures and scaffolding; in automotive manufacturing, they connect components such as engines and chassis; and in electronic equipment production, they secure circuit boards and casings. As long as the environment is relatively dry and waterproofing requirements are not stringent, ordinary nuts can perform well.
Waterproof nuts are primarily used in applications where waterproofing is a critical requirement. Waterproof nuts are used in outdoor electrical equipment, such as streetlights and distribution boxes, to prevent rainwater intrusion and protect internal electrical components from moisture damage. They are particularly indispensable in shipbuilding and marine engineering, connecting ship decks, bulkheads, and underwater equipment to ensure reliable and airtight connections in seawater environments. Furthermore, waterproof nuts are used in bathroom fixtures, swimming pool equipment, and other areas frequently exposed to water to ensure proper operation and longevity.
In terms of installation and maintenance, standard nuts are relatively simple to install and can be tightened to the specified torque using common tools such as wrenches. If a nut becomes loose or damaged during maintenance, it is easy to replace due to its universal structure and specifications.
